Mid-Year Meeting and “Applying LCCA for Fair Pavement Type Selection” Workshop

ACPA will be hosting members and other guests for the 2014 Mid-Year Meeting, which will be held June 24 through 26 at the Millennium Knickerbocker Hotel in Chicago.   Also, a workshop on “Applying Life Cycle Cost Analysis (LCCA) for Fair Pavement Type Selection” will be held on the first day of the meeting, June 24th.

This is the fifth installment of our five-part series on jointed precast concrete pavements presented by the National Precast Concrete Association and the American Concrete Pavement Association.    

This is an important topic for agencies/owners, contractors, consultants and others with an interest in precast concrete pavements.  In this webinar, we will take a closer look at some of the ways jointed precast concrete pavement technology and products are being improved upon, as well as what potential improvements and applications are or soon will be available.

 “The Concrete Yard” is a portal for contractor-to-contractor negotiated sales of concrete plants; slipform and form-riding paving equipment; placers and trimmers; concrete paving forms; conveyors and dust-control systems; and stringline equipment and accessories.

Illinois Tollway Open House Spotlights Sustainability

More than 125 transportation construction officials participated in the Illinois Tollway’s Open House. Sponsored by the National Concrete Pavement Technology, the 1.5 day event included presentations that focused on sustainable construction materials and practices.

The event drew officials from more than 25 state transportation agencies and the Federal Highway Administration, along with representatives from industry and academia. 

Although sustainability was the main focus of the overall program, the participants also had the opportunity to see presentations that covered other essential details about the project, including recycled aggregate (including “black rock” and recycled concrete aggregates); soils; subbases; and the composite mainline concrete. The project featured a two-lift concrete overlay on asphalt, as well as pervious asphalt pavement. Participants also heard presentations about the pavement design; mixture design; and sustainability measurement using  the FHWA’s INVEST (Infrastructure Voluntary Evaluation Sustainability Tool) and Life-Cycle Assessment tools.
ACPA President and CEO Jerry Voigt commended the Tollway officials, not only for researching innovative construction materials, designs, and construction methods, but also for implementing them quickly and decisively. 

Voigt also moderated a contractor panel that included Rick Sniegowski, K-Five Construction; Bill Madden, Plote Construction; Mark Barkowski, F.H. Paschen, and Randy Riley, Illinois Chapter-ACPA, Inc. The three contractors are involved in the pavement construction in the multi-phase project.

On the second day of the event, participants had the opportunity to see the mainline paving; construction of a bridge deck; and the central-mix and ready-mixed concrete plant operations. Participants also had the opportunity to see demonstrations of the pervious asphalt and MIT scan device. 

The project showcased was on the Jane Adams Memorial Tollway (Interstate 9) from the Elgin Toll Plaza (Cook County) to Genoa Road (Boone County). The project is part of a 15-year, 12 billion capital program aimed at improving mobility, relieving congestion; and reducing pollution.
