Thursday, April 25, 2019
Noon to 1:30 CDT | 17:00-18:30 UTC
Presenter: Rolf Breitenbücher, Professor, Ruhr-University Bochum (Germany) & Director-ISCP
This webinar covers important information about Alkali-Silica-Reaction (ASR). Presented by the International Society for Concrete Pavements, with support from the American Concrete Pavement Association is developed with contractors, consultants, transportation agencies, engineers and consultants, and others with an interest in advancing the quality and durability of concrete pavements.
Numerous types of damage can occur in concrete pavements because of ASR. Although this destructive reaction in concrete has been investigated extensively for common concrete structures, special circumstances such as external alkali-supplied via de-icing agents and microcracking in the concrete matrix caused by the continuously passing traffic may also present risks of ASR-related damage.
This webinar will present an overview of the reaction mechanisms, suitable prevention measures, and techniques for evaluating ASR-afflicted pavements in situ. The webinar will address different approaches in preventing an ASR, including the limitation of the alkali content in the binder or a special selection of aggregates with respect to their ASR-sensitivity. Also included will be appropriate repair measures such as hydrophobing or top-layer replacement.
PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT HOURS
The American Concrete Pavement Association will award a certificate of completion that may be used for company credit and/or 1.5 professional development hours (PDHs).
Participants interested in earning PDH’s are responsible for determining the applicability of any training programs toward licensing requirements in their respective state/province. This program is oriented toward jurisdictions that allow self-reporting for licensure purposes. Participants are strongly advised to check the applicability of this training along with other reporting requirements in advance of taking this course.
