ACPA had a commanding presence at World of Concrete 2017, thanks to a steady stream of booth visitors and a large number of people who participated in five education and tech transfer tracks–in all, 15 hours of training–by the association.

Highlights included:

  • An industry training course on “Achieving High-Quality Roller Compacted Concrete,” presented by Corey Zollinger, Cemex; Chris Carwie, AG Peltz; and Fares Abdo, Morgan Corp.
  • Two industry training events covering smooth concrete pavements (by ACPA’s Jerry Voigt) and an overview of ACPA and the concrete pavement industry (by Jerry Voigt and Eric Ferrebee).
  • A training seminar on locating joints properly by Jerry Voigt, along with a hands-on workshop on jointing, which he and Ferrebee presented.
  • At ACPA’s booth on the show floor, ACPA Chairperson Lori Tiefenthaler (Lehigh Cement, Inc.), met with many of the more than 200 visitors who stopped by the booth during the week.  (Tiefenthaler also visited with many ACPA members at their respective booths during the week.)  ACPA member Gerard Moulzolf, P.E., American Engineering Testing, along with Steve Davis, Georgia Concrete Pavement Association, joined forces with ACPA’s Jerry Voigt, Eric Ferrebee, Bill Davenport to talk about concrete paving and pavements with booth visitors, as well.
  • Chairperson Tiefenthaler, along with Davenport, also participated in video interviews by Roger Mann, Construction News Tracker Chief Correspondent, for the popular video series produced by the publisher of Concrete Contractor and Equipment Today magazines, and the ForConstructionPros website.
  • Chairperson Tiefenthaler, as well as ACPA’s Voigt and Davenport, also participated in a press conference to discuss market conditions and expectations, as well as two new programs, ACPA’s Interns for the Future program and the ACPA Emerging Leaders Group.   Both programs are aimed at increasing both the diversity and level of participation at the national and regional/state levels.

In all, World of Concrete was considered one of the most successful in the 40 years ACPA has served as a co-sponsor.

ACPA Staff Focus on Technical and Trade Events

Two focal points for ACPA staff (as well as many members and Chapter/State affiliates) are the Transportation Research Board’s (TRB’s) 96th Annual Meeting and World of Concrete 2017.

Both events are headliners for January, with the TRB meeting starting yesterday and World of Concrete starting next Monday.  ACPA’s 2017 Chairperson Lori Tiefenthaler (Lehigh Hanson, Inc.) will play a key role at both events.

At TRB in Washington, D.C., ACPA staff will participate in many of the research and technology presentations, gleaning from them some of the latest developments in transportation construction research, while also looking for opportunities to both apply some of those findings and participate in discussions that impact ACPA members and our agency/owner customers.  Along with Chairperson Tiefenthaler, ACPA’s Jerry Voigt, Leif Wathne, Gary Mitchell, and Eric Ferrebee are participating in the week’s events, which iniclude various technical forums, as well as meetings with key agency officials.

One highlight of the TRB meeting is the annual ACPA/TRB Annual Reception, which is being held this evening.   The event allows transportation-research officials, customer contacts with state DOT’s, and industry to meet in an informal, relaxed setting to discuss current and emerging issues of relevance to the concrete pavement industry, as well as agencies/owners.

World of Concrete Highlights

WOC16_CN_banner_blueA2-smallAs one of the earliest co-sponsors of World of Concrete, ACPA was once again an active and visible participant in the show this year.  In addition to actively promoting the show throughout much of 2015, ACPA also participated in the exhibit space and educational tracks.

ACPA Chairman Steve Jackson (Cedar Valley Corp., LLC); Steve Davis, Executive Director of the Georgia Concrete Pavement Association/Southeast Chapter; and ACPA’s Jerry Voigt, Bill Davenport, and Eric Ferrebee had the opportunity to meet with visitors who stopped by the booth, which ACPA shared with technology partner, IGGA.

Jerry Voigt presented a technical seminar, “How to Incorporate Concrete Overlays into Broad Construction Strategies” as part of the World of Concrete 90-minute seminar program.  Steve Jackson and Jerry Voigt also provided an outlook for 2016, industry perspectives on events and trends, and an update on its Wikipave™  app at a press conference held the first day of the show.

Voigt, Davenport, and Ferrebee also presented a 3-hour special “Industry Day” to registered participants.   This was the first time ACPA participated in this type of event at World of Concrete.  The event, “ACPA FuturePave: The Changing World of Surface Transportation Infrastructure,” included an overview of ACPA; perspectives on the U.S. pavement market; ACPA’s advocacy efforts with the federal government; an overview of ACPA’s Count on Concrete promotional campaign; and discussion of ACPA technical services and informational resources.

World of Concrete 2016 was reported to have drawn more than 55,000 attendees.
