Sustainability 501 – Beyond the Basics of Sustainability for Concrete Pavement

Recently, there has been a renewed and increased focus on sustainability initiatives in the pavement community. Reducing carbon emissions is once again a key area of emphasis for FHWA and many DOTs. While much of the recent focus has been on quantifying embodied carbon emissions through the use of Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs), it is still critically important to consider the full life cycle of a pavement. This first session of our two-part workshop on sustainability will feature a brief overview of the importance of life cycle thinking before diving beyond the surface level talking points of the use phase impacts featuring the latest MIT research. These impacts are extremely important to give proper context to pavement sustainability.
Sustainability 502 – Communicating the Sustainability Advantage

The second session of our two-part workshop on sustainability will focus on messaging and properly communicating the critical topics of sustainability. This will provide an overview of how to take the concepts we know to be important and discuss them with key decision makers. This will feature updates from PCA (including promotional tools supporting their Roadmap to Carbon Neutrality) and ACPA’s new marketing and communications consultant AOE.
