Excellence In Concrete Pavement Award Winners Announced

ACPA is pleased to announce  the recipients of the 35th Annual Excellence in Concrete Pavement Awards. For over 30 years, the awards program has recognized the contractors, engineers, and project owners responsible for the country’s most outstanding concrete pavement projects. Award winners will be celebrated during the Excellence in Concrete Pavement Awards banquet on Thursday, December 5, during ACPA’s 61st Annual Meeting. Formal letters and plaque proofs will be sent to project contacts this week.

This year, the Association recognizes 31 award-winning projects and the hard work, outstanding quality, and creative approaches to problem-solving demonstrated by project partners. In all, ACPA congratulates 23 unique contractors whose exceptional projects span 12 affiliated Chapter/State Associations. ACPA also expresses appreciation to the 32 professionals who served as judges of the award submittals, reviewing nomination details, and scoring the projects.

In keeping with tradition, the announcement of the “Gold” and “Silver” award levels will remain a secret until the award presentation ceremony during the Annual Meeting.

Deadline for Nominating Colleagues for the Distinguished Services Award Approaching

The deadline for nominations for the Distinguished Services Awards is Friday, September 20.

Awards will be presented at the Distinguished Service Luncheon on December 5 as part of ACPA’s Annual Meeting. Awards categories include:

  • Hartmann-Hirschman-Egan Lifetime Achievement
  • Marlin J. Knutson Award for Technical Achievement
  • Outstanding Pavement Promotion
  • Lifetime Pavement Recognition (Airport)
  • Sustainable Practices Recognition

 Save the Date: 2024 ACPA Best Practices in Airfield Pavement Design and Construction Workshop

ACPA will offer its annual three-day national workshop on best practices in the design, construction, and rehabilitation of concrete pavements used for airport applications on November 5-7, 2024, in Orlando, Florida.

The workshop program will feature technical presentations by subject matter experts with practical experience in the topic areas. Leading the discussions will be experts from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineer’s Transportation System Center, the FAA Headquarters Office of Airport Safety and Standards, the Air Force Civil Engineering Center, ACPA, and companies with direct involvement in the design and construction of FAA and Tri-Services airfield pavement projects. The workshop is intended for owners’ representatives, design engineers, contractor personnel, and others with an interest in concrete pavement design, construction, and rehabilitation for airport applications.

ACPA/PA President John Becker Testifies Before Pennsylvania House Transportation Committee

On Wednesday, September 4, ACPA/PA President John Becker, PE, testified during an informational meeting on Moving Pennsylvania Forward by Investing in Roads, Bridges, and Transit for the Pennsylvania House Transportation Committee.

Asserting that “transportation investment funding is vital for building and maintaining our infrastructure, for allowing our citizens to get to work, to their health care providers, to their places of worship, to community events, and to get home SAFELY,” Mr. Becker noted that a steep decline in the use of concrete pavement in Pennsylvania is concerning.

Arguing for a renewed commitment to concrete pavement, and noting the industry has worked “tirelessly with PennDOT to develop ready-to-use specifications and standards for concrete overlays, roller compacted concrete, concrete intersections which include roundabouts and divergent diamond interchanges, composite pavement, and alternate-design alternate-bid policies,” Mr. Becker advised “now is the time for putting all these tools to use, and now is the time for investing responsibly in the transportation infrastructure so that we can put the men and women who are the concrete pavement industry back to work in earnest.”
