Final Call for Distinguished Service Award Nominations

Last call for submissions for the 2024 ACPA Distinguished Service Awards, which will be presented during the 61st ACPA Annual Meeting. Submittals are due by this Friday, September 27.

Awards include:

Marlin J. Knutson Award for Technical Achievement – Presented annually since 1998, this award recognizes an individual or group who has made significant contributions to advance the development and implementation of technical innovations and best practices in the design and construction of concrete pavements.

Outstanding Pavement Promotion Award – Awarded since 1998, this recognition is presented to an individual or group who has made significant contributions through promotional efforts or programs to advance the awareness, specification, and/or placement of concrete pavements.

Lifetime Pavement Recognition Award (Airport) – Awarded annually since 1994, this recognition is presented to the agency owner of an in-service concrete pavement that has demonstrated exceptional performance and service to its local community, state, and users.

Sustainable Practices Recognition Award – First presented in 2010, this award highlights an organization or team (owner and contractor) who demonstrate leadership by implementing design and construction practices that consider societal, environmental, and economic factors.

Hartman-Hirschman-Egan Award – Awarded annually since 1968, the recognition is presented to individuals or organizations for unparalleled, long-term commitment, dedication, participation, and leadership in the concrete pavement community.

Save the Date: 2024 ACPA Best Practices in Airfield Pavement Design and Construction Workshop

ACPA will offer its annual three-day national workshop on best practices in the design, construction, and rehabilitation of concrete pavements used for airport applications on November 5-7, 2024, in Orlando, Florida.

The workshop program will feature technical presentations by subject matter experts with practical experience in the topic areas. Leading the discussions will be experts from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineer’s Transportation System Center, the FAA Headquarters Office of Airport Safety and Standards, the Air Force Civil Engineering Center, ACPA, and companies with direct involvement in the design and construction of FAA and Tri-Services airfield pavement projects. The workshop is intended for owners’ representatives, design engineers, contractor personnel, and others with an interest in concrete pavement design, construction, and rehabilitation for airport applications.

The Innovative Mitigation Partnerships for Asphalt and Concrete Technologies Act (IMPACT Act) Passes U.S. House of Representatives

H.R. 7685, the IMPACT Act, passed the U.S. House of Representatives on September 23, 2024, under the guidance of lead sponsors Representatives Max Miller (R-OH) and Valerie Foushee (D-NC).

The IMPACT Act requires the Department of Energy (DOE) to establish a program that “supports advanced production of low-emissions cement, concrete, and asphalt. Specifically, the program must support research, development, and commercial application of production processes for low-emissions cement, concrete, and asphalt that are more cost-effective, durable, or resource-efficient (i.e., advanced production). The program must particularly focus on carbon capture technologies, energy-efficient processes, research involving novel materials, and other specified technologies and innovative processes,” according to the Congressional Research Service’s bill summary.

ACPA Adds Keynote Speaker Ed Sullivan to Annual Meeting Agenda

ACPA is excited to welcome Senior Vice President and Chief Economist for Portland Cement Association, Ed Sullivan to our Annual Meeting. Ed will address attendees as the keynote luncheon speaker on Thursday, December 5, 2024.

Ed has more than 40 years of industrial economic analysis in support of senior executives and has played an important role in several U.S. Government trade policy decisions. His analysis also supports the cement industry’s advocacy efforts in Washington, DC. Ed has been cited by the Chicago Federal Reserve for his forecast accuracy. Various other forecasting surveys have placed Ed among the most accurate construction economists in the country. Over the years, Ed has been named a “key influencer” in the domestic and international cement and concrete industry by various trade magazines.

ACPA’s Emerging Leaders Group is Making Plans for the Future

The Emerging Leaders Group (ELG) will be very active at the 2024 ACPA Annual Meeting hosting several events throughout the conference. To kick off the Annual Meeting, the ELG will give back to our host community through service so plan to arrive early. The service project will be followed by the ELG meeting on Monday afternoon. Finally, the ELG will be hosting a 5k Fun Run/Walk around the Camby to get Thursday morning started! We encourage all emerging leaders to consider joining the ELG and attend the Annual Meeting to get involved.

ACPA Acknowledges the Passing of Former ACPA Chairman and ICPA Past President, Colin Chresten Jensen

On September 10, 2024, former ACPA Chairman and ICPA Past President Colin Chresten Jensen passed away at his home on West Okoboji Lake in Iowa.

Born in Sioux City, Iowa, on February 27, 1935, to Irving Frederick and Elizabeth Macfarlane Jensen, he graduated from Central High School in 1953, attended Iowa State University, and later graduated from Yale in 1957 with a degree in Civil Engineering. After serving in the U.S. Public Health Service in New York, he returned to Sioux City to join the family business, Irving F. Jensen Co., Inc., where he became President and led several subsidiaries. Colin was an industry leader and served as President of various industry organizations, including the Iowa and Nebraska AGC and ACPA.

ACPA received a notification of Colin’s passing with a note from current Chairman Ernie Peterson that said, “Former ACPA Chairman. He was quite the man and concrete paving leader. I knew Colin early in my career. Good guy and great friend of many in the industry.”
