Registration Takes Off for the 2026 Airport Workshop

ACPA is excited to bring the annual Airport Workshop to Arizona, October 27-29, 2026. This three-day workshop offers discussions and presentations on best practices in the design, construction, and rehabilitation of concrete pavements used for airport applications.

As always, the workshop is expected to feature technical subject matter experts from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Transportation Center, the Federal Aviation Administration Office of Airport Safety and Standards, the Air Force Civil Engineering Center, and more. Don’t miss this opportunity to participate in open discussions about interpreting and applying airport concrete pavement specifications used by the FAA P-501 and Unified Facilities Guide Specifications (UFGS) 32 13 14.13 specifications.

Airfield Paving Research Takes Shape at Charlotte Douglas International Airport

Test sections were recently paved at Charlotte Douglas International Airport as part of an Airport Concrete Pavement Technology Program (ACPTP) research project focused on concrete airfield paving continuity. The FAA-funded study is being led by member Fonte & Company, with paving completed by ACPA member contractor Hi-Way Paving.  Sarah Dalton was on-site representing ACPA.

The project represents an important step toward better understanding the relationships among paver speed, vibration, and concrete mixture workability—and how these factors affect the consistency and quality of the finished pavement.

FHWA’s Mobile Concrete Technology Center was also onsite collecting data and performing testing. In addition to applying technologies commonly used on highway projects, the team evaluated several new airfield-specific tests developed through the ongoing research on performance-engineered mixtures for airfields.

This unique effort brought together the FAA, FHWA, ACPA, CP Tech Center, Charlotte Douglas International Airport along with the research team. The collaboration demonstrates the value of combining research expertise, field experience, and agency resources to advance concrete paving practices.

FAA Releases Draft Quality Management Advisory Circular for Industry Review

The FAA has released draft Advisory Circular AC 150/5370-12C for industry review. This advisory circular establishes standards and guidance for quality management practices on airport construction projects.

Tech Tuesday: How Non-Destructive Testing is Transforming Concrete Pavement Quality

Advances in non-destructive testing (NDT) are helping contractors, engineers, and owners make smarter decisions, reduce construction risks, and deliver longer-lasting concrete pavements. Join us for the next Technology Tuesday webinar, “Non Destructive Test (NDT) Methods Used in Concrete Pavement Construction,” scheduled for Tuesday, August 11, 2026, at noon Central.

This informative session will provide an overview of the latest NDT technologies being used in concrete pavement construction and how they support improved quality control and quality assurance (QC/QA). Participants will learn how tools such as Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR), MIRA, MIT Scan systems, maturity meters, and real-time smoothness technologies can help identify defects early, verify design parameters, optimize construction processes, and create digital as-built records.

Industry experts Dave Merritt, Senior Engineer with The Transtec Group, and Jim Grove, P.E., Concrete Technology Transfer, will share practical insights on how NDT methods provide broader and more reliable data, helping project teams improve durability, reduce uncertainty, and achieve better project outcomes.

PennDOT Announces Additional $775 Million for Road and Bridge Projects

PennDOT will invest an additional $775 million in highway and bridge maintenance projects across Pennsylvania over the next two fiscal years, including $500 million in projects this construction season and $275 million in FY 2027-28.

The funding, supported by Governor Josh Shapiro and Transportation Secretary Michael Carroll, will focus on shovel-ready paving and box culvert projects that can be delivered quickly to improve local roads and support economic activity throughout the Commonwealth. Projects will be distributed using PennDOT’s existing 12-Year Transportation Program allocation formula and tracked separately to ensure transparency and accountability.
