ACPA Highlights Concrete Solutions for Public Works

ACPA was recently engaged at the American Public Works Association’s Public Works Expo in Houston, Texas. The Annual PWX event brings together cities and municipalities from around the country to learn about the best technologies available to help improve their communities. The exhibit hall and technical sessions cover all aspects of public works needs. ACPA’s Senior Director of Technical Services, Eric Ferrebee was on hand and in the ACPA booth to help attendees learn that there are concrete solutions to their pavement needs. He and Lee Shepard (ICPA/IRMCA) were actively engaged with participants to educate them on how concrete pavement should be a regular strategy and tool for their communities.

Help County Engineers Stretch Roadway Dollars Further: Upcoming NACE Webinar Features ACPA Experts

County engineers are often responsible for maintaining extensive roadway networks with limited budgets, making every infrastructure investment count. That’s why we’re encouraging ACPA members to share an upcoming NACE webinar, Maximizing County Road Investments with Concrete Pavements, with their county engineering and local agency contacts.

Featuring ACPA’s Eric Ferrebee and the CP Tech Center’s Dan King, this webinar will highlight how counties and smaller agencies across the country are successfully using concrete pavements and overlays to improve roadway performance and maximize long-term value. Attendees will learn about practical tools and resources, including the CP Tech Center’s new guide, A Fresh Look at Concrete Pavements for Local Agencies, and a demonstration of the free pavement design tool, PavementDesigner.org.

If you work with county engineers, public works officials, or consultants serving local agencies, please help spread the word and encourage them to register. This session offers valuable insights and resources that can help local agencies make informed, cost-effective decisions for their roadway networks.

ACPA’s Airport Workshop Only 6 Weeks Away!

ACPA is excited to bring the annual Airport Workshop to Arizona, October 27-29, 2026. This premier three-day event brings together industry professionals to explore the latest best practices in the design, construction, and rehabilitation of concrete pavements for airport applications. Attendees will gain valuable insights through technical presentations, expert-led discussions, and opportunities to connect with peers from across the industry.

The workshop is expected to feature technical subject matter experts from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Transportation Center, the Federal Aviation Administration Office of Airport Safety and Standards, the Air Force Civil Engineering Center, and more. Don’t miss this opportunity to participate in open discussions about interpreting and applying airport concrete pavement specifications used by the FAA P-501 and Unified Facilities Guide Specifications (UFGS) 32 13 14.13 specifications.

The Airport Workshop will take place at the Hyatt Place Tempe located at 601 E 6th St, Tempe, AZ. ACPA has secured a small block of rooms for event attendees. Please secure your reservations prior to the hotel cut-off date of September 28, 2026.

FAA’s Airport Concrete Pavement Technology Program Releases New RFP for Research

The ACPTP has released a new Request for Proposals (RFP) focused on evaluating silicon-based, spray-applied surface treatments for airfield concrete pavements. The research will develop a performance-based framework for testing and qualifying these products, helping airport owners and the industry better assess their effectiveness and support broader implementation.

The resulting framework is expected to provide a consistent approach for evaluating surface treatments, support specification development, and reduce implementation risk as part of long-term pavement management strategies.

Proposals for ACPTP 2026-16: Silicon-based Surface Treatments for Airfield Concrete Pavement are due by 4:00 p.m. CT on October 6, 2026. Questions must be submitted to ACPTP@iastate.edu by October 1, 2026. View the complete RFP and proposal requirements on the ACPTP website.

Established in 2021 through a cooperative agreement between the FAA and the CP Tech Center, the ACPTP conducts applied research focused on extending pavement service life and improving the performance of the nation’s airfield infrastructure. ACPA played a key role in advocating for the program’s creation and continues to serve as a liaison to the ACPTP, helping represent industry interests and support the program’s ongoing success.

Don’t Miss the October Tech Tuesday Webinar: A Fresh Look at Concrete Pavement for Local Agencies

The next Tech Tuesday webinar, A Fresh Look at Concrete Pavement for Local Agencies, will be October 13 at noon Central.

Concrete pavements have demonstrated excellent performance in a wide variety of applications and represent a cost-competitive solution with minimal maintenance needs and a long service life. This webinar highlights a new FHWA-sponsored document published by the CP Tech Center, A Fresh Look at Concrete Pavement for Local Agencies, which introduces concrete pavements to practitioners who have not had the opportunity, or only limited opportunities, to work with concrete pavements in the past. The new guide provides basic technical information and resources that are available to assist agencies in evaluating the viability of implementing concrete pavements into their networks and in realizing the long-term value they provide. The information in this guide will prove beneficial to those who have little to no experience with concrete pavements, as well as those looking to refresh their basic knowledge.

Presented includes Robert Spragg, PhD, Federal Highway Administration and Gerald Voigt, P.E., Square One Pavement Consulting LLC.

Introducing the ACPTP Webinar Series: Runway Insights

The Airport Concrete Pavement Technology Program (ACPTP) is pleased to launch Runway Insights, a new monthly webinar series highlighting the latest research, technologies, and practical recommendations developed through the ACPTP. Each month, Runway Insights will bring research findings directly to the engineers and professionals responsible for the design, construction, rehabilitation, and maintenance of concrete airfield pavements. Sessions will focus on practical, field-ready information that can help airports and industry partners improve pavement performance, extend service life, and make informed decisions. Webinars will be held monthly, generally on the third Thursday of each month at noon Central.

First Webinar: Best Practices for Rapid Repair, Rehabilitation, and Reconstruction

Thursday, October 15, 2026 | Noon Central

The inaugural Runway Insights webinar will feature Scott Murrell and Timothy Parsons of Applied Research Associates (ARA), who will present key findings and recommendations from the ACPTP research project, Best Practices for Rapid Repair, Rehabilitation and Reconstruction of Concrete Airport Pavements. Based on the report published in March 2026, this webinar will explore proven practices and recommendations for rapidly repairing, rehabilitating, and reconstructing concrete airfield pavements—helping airport owners and practitioners minimize disruptions while achieving durable, high-quality pavement performance.
