An ACPA member project, State Highway 13 in northwest Colorado, is receiving recognition from the Colorado Department of Transportation and FHWA this month as a highlighted overlay project. This highway previously had won awards from the CO/WY Chapter of ACPA, ACI, and a gold Excellence in Pavement Award from ACPA in 2021. The road is a two-lane remote road near oil fields that carries 20 percent truck traffic. A six-inch concrete overlay covering six miles of the highway now provides a long-term and low-cost solution.
The overlay had other sustainability aspects as ACPA member Castle Rock Construction used recycled coal ash, recycled asphalt millings and optimized aggregate gradations. Not only are these solutions sustainable, but they also lead to long life, improved durability, increase smoothness and weather resiliency. Congratulations to ACPA’s Colorado/Wyoming Chapter and to Castle Rock Construction for the recognition.
