The FHWA announced the awardees for their Climate Challenge funding last week. This funding was part of a $7.1 million dollar commitment to curb carbon emissions associated with pavements and assess the impacts of sustainable pavements. This project was part of President Biden’s Buy Clean Initiative, which aims to promote low-carbon construction materials nationwide.

The Climate Challenge initiative provides funding, training and technical assistance for state DOTs to explore the use of EPDs and LCAs. Together with the MIT Concrete Sustainability Hub (MIT CSHub) and NRMCA, ACPA assisted chapters and affiliates in applying for this grant money and will begin working on EPD and LCA award projects in Iowa and Indiana in the coming weeks.
