Celebrating Concrete Pavement Week—and Creating the Future We Want

This week, a special shoutout goes to John Becker, ACPA/PA, who recently shared the exciting news that the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania has officially declared June 28 through July 4 Concrete Pavement Week. This recognition marks an important milestone for our industry and highlights the vital role concrete pavements, our promoters, and valued partners play in building durable, safe, and sustainable transportation infrastructure.

Concrete Pavement Week is a concept developed by the American Concrete Pavement Association Chapter/State Executive Committee and staff. What began as an idea to elevate awareness of concrete paving has now become a reality, and we look forward to celebrating this inaugural week with our partners across the industry while growing its impact in the years ahead.

As we celebrate this achievement, it’s also an opportunity to think critically about the future of our industry.

When we consider how we promote concrete paving and grow the concrete paving market, we must be willing to think outside the box, take advantage of every opportunity and build relationships that amplify our influence. We should ask ourselves a simple but important question: Is the status quo good enough?

In many markets across this country, the answer is no.

The challenge before us is not only how we create new opportunities for concrete paving, but also how we answer that opportunity with quality pavements that serve communities for generations. Concrete’s value proposition has never been stronger, but value alone doesn’t guarantee growth. Growth requires advocacy, innovation, and engagement from us all.

It requires us to actively tell the story of concrete pavement’s long-term performance, sustainability benefits, resilience, and life-cycle value. It requires us to build relationships with owners, agencies, contractors, engineers, and stakeholders who influence paving decisions. Most importantly, it requires us to be willing ambassadors for our industry. And anyone can serve, just believe in the cause.

At the same time, we must invest in the future by reaching the next generation of leaders. How are we introducing students and young professionals to the opportunities within our industry? How are we creating pathways for them to contribute fresh ideas and embrace emerging technologies? How are we fostering innovation that ensures concrete pavement remains relevant and competitive for decades to come?

Concrete Pavement Week provides the perfect platform to start these conversations and turn them into action.

This inaugural celebration is about more than recognizing concrete pavement, it’s about building momentum. It’s about challenging ourselves to become stronger advocates, better communicators, and more engaged leaders. It’s about creating opportunities for concrete paving and then delivering quality products and projects that reinforce our industry’s reputation.

As Concrete Pavement Week approaches, I encourage each of you to get involved. Share your successes. Tell your stories. Engage with your communities. Support workforce development efforts. Champion innovation. Most importantly, be an advocate for concrete paving.

The future of our industry won’t be determined by the status quo. It will be shaped by the actions we take today.

Let’s use Concrete Pavement Week as a catalyst to create that future together.

And please, please, please keep those puppy dog paws off hot pavement all summer long!
