FAA’s Airport Concrete Pavement Technology Program Releases New RFP for Research – Deadline for Questions is Thursday, October 1

The ACPTP has released a new Request for Proposals (RFP) focused on evaluating silicon-based, spray-applied surface treatments for airfield concrete pavements. The research will develop a performance-based framework for testing and qualifying these products, helping airport owners and the industry better assess their effectiveness and support broader implementation.

The resulting framework is expected to provide a consistent approach for evaluating surface treatments, support specification development, and reduce implementation risk as part of long-term pavement management strategies.

Proposals for ACPTP 2026-16: Silicon-based Surface Treatments for Airfield Concrete Pavement are due by 4:00 p.m. CT on October 6, 2026. Questions must be submitted to ACPTP@iastate.edu by October 1, 2026. View the complete RFP and proposal requirements on the ACPTP website.

Established in 2021 through a cooperative agreement between the FAA and the CP Tech Center, the ACPTP conducts applied research focused on extending pavement service life and improving the performance of the nation’s airfield infrastructure. ACPA played a key role in advocating for the program’s creation and continues to serve as a liaison to the ACPTP, helping represent industry interests and support the program’s ongoing success.

Registration Now Open for October and November Tech Tuesday Webinars

The October Tech Tuesday webinar – A Fresh Look at Concrete Pavement for Local Agencies – will take place October 13 at noon Central. The webinar will highlight a new FHWA-sponsored document published by the CP Tech Center, A Fresh Look at Concrete Pavement for Local Agencies, which introduces concrete pavements to practitioners who have not had the opportunity, or only limited opportunities, to work with concrete pavements in the past. The new guide provides basic technical information and resources that are available to assist agencies in evaluating the viability of implementing concrete pavements into their networks and in realizing the long-term value they provide. The information in this guide will prove beneficial to those who have little to no experience with concrete pavements, as well as those looking to refresh their basic knowledge. Presenters include Robert Spragg with the Federal Highway Administration and Gerald Voigt with Square One Pavement Consulting, LLC. Click here to register.

The November installment – Lessons Learned from the Largest Pavement Experiment in the Known Universe – will be November 10 at noon Central. This installment of the webinar series will provide a history of the Long-Term Pavement Performance (LTPP) SPS-2 experiment and will focus on key findings to date given the active monitoring of each test section from construction to the present. As part of the Transportation Pooled Fund Study 5(291) numerous SPS-2 Tech Days were held, where classroom and field visits to active projects were performed, and 11 reports documenting aspects of SPS-2 test section performance were completed. Presenters include Larry Scofield with IGGA and ACPA and Kevin Senn with NCE. Click here to register.

Introducing the ACPTP Webinar Series: Runway Insights

The Airport Concrete Pavement Technology Program (ACPTP) is pleased to launch Runway Insights, a new monthly webinar series highlighting the latest research, technologies, and practical recommendations developed through the ACPTP. Webinars will be held monthly, generally on the third Thursday of each month at noon Central.

First Webinar: Best Practices for Rapid Repair, Rehabilitation, and Reconstruction

Thursday, October 15, 2026 | Noon Central

The inaugural Runway Insights webinar will feature Scott Murrell and Timothy Parsons of Applied Research Associates (ARA), who will present key findings and recommendations from the ACPTP research project, Best Practices for Rapid Repair, Rehabilitation and Reconstruction of Concrete Airport Pavements. Based on the report published in March 2026, this webinar will explore proven practices and recommendations for rapidly repairing, rehabilitating, and reconstructing concrete airfield pavements—helping airport owners and practitioners minimize disruptions while achieving durable, high-quality pavement performance.

ACPA Expands Outreach to County Engineers

Over the last several years, ACPA has been actively engaged with the National Association of County Engineers (NACE) to help promote the use of concrete pavement for county highway applications. Last week, ACPA directly engaged county engineers through the NACE Connect Webinar series. ACPA provided this webinar to help highlight how concrete pavement can be utilized by county engineers and worked to demystify the process to design, specify, and build concrete pavements and why they would be a good investment. The webinar highlighted the soon to be released guide “A Fresh Look at Concrete Pavement for Local Agencies” from FHWA through their cooperative agreement with the CP Tech Center with Dan King covering the guide. The webinar continued with Eric Ferrebee, ACPA’s Senior Director of Technical Services, educating the engineering attendees on how PavementDesigner can be utilized to design and optimize concrete pavements for their applications.

ACPA Shares Technical Expertise and Strengthens Industry Collaboration at Missouri/Kansas Chapter Bus Tour

ACPA’s Sarah Dalton attended and presented at the Missouri/Kansas Chapter ACPA Bus Tour, a two-day event that brought together representatives from both state DOTs, contractors, and other industry members.

The event included a tour of a local ready mixed concrete plant, along with presentations and discussions highlighting several active and recently completed concrete pavement projects throughout the region. The program provided an opportunity for attendees to share project experiences, lessons learned, and best practices while connecting with others across the concrete pavement industry.

The workshop concluded with Dalton presenting on Water Management in Concrete Production and Placement, focusing on how water is managed throughout batching, transportation, placement, finishing, and curing and the impact it can have on concrete quality, constructability, and long-term pavement performance.

Advancing Concrete Pavements for Airfields: ACPA Shares Expertise at SWIFT Conference

ACPA’s Sarah Dalton attended and presented at the SWIFT Conference in Edmonton, Alberta, on behalf of the Cement Association of Canada. Dalton presented on best practices for airfield concrete pavement mixture design, sharing guidance for developing durable, constructible mixtures that meet the unique demands of airfield paving.

The conference also provided a valuable opportunity for ACPA to engage with local contractor members, consultants, airport representatives, and Department of National Defence (DND) personnel. Discussions throughout the event provided insight into current airfield pavement practices and challenges in Canada while allowing ACPA to share technical resources and expertise with the broader aviation pavement community.
