ACPA and the concrete pavement industry were well represented at ACI Spring Virtual Convention held March 28-April 1. Eric Ferrebee, Gary Mitchell, Mark Snyder, and Jim Mack were among industry representatives participating in committee and subcommittee meetings.

Eric participated in the ACI 327 roller compacted concrete pavements, ACI 325 Committee on concrete pavements, and the 325 Subcommittee on concrete overlays. He provided an update to the RCC Pavements committee on ACPA’s activities and mentioned RCC will be included in several of our technical activities this year, including the industrial pavements synthesis, one of the proposals recently approved by the Strategic Advisory Committee and the ACPA Board of Directors.

Gary Mitchell provided ACPA’s update at the ACI 325 meeting and focused on ACPA’s upcoming mid-year meeting as well as the airport pavement workshop, both of which are being planned as in-person meetings. He also provided an overview of our efforts in advocating for and securing funding for the FAA cooperative agreement and providing support to the FAA and CP Tech Center.

The ACI 325 subcommittee on overlays was focused on a discussion of the nomenclature of overlays used in one of their upcoming guides. Peter Taylor led this discussion those participating in the discussion all agreed that we need to be consistent across the entire industry to help move forward the adoption and use of concrete overlays.

The 325 Committee hosted a two part session on Thursday: Concrete Pavement Design and Construction Special Session Honoring Dr. Shiraz Tayabji. The first session began with Dr Tayabji discussing 40 Years of Concrete Pavement Innovations and some of his observations about those innovations. The session also included presentations on Theory Versus Reality in Concrete Airfield Pavement Engineering (presented by Dr. Ray Rollings); Continuously Reinforced Concrete Pavements (presented by Dr. Dan Zollinger), and Concrete Strength Variability and Mix Design for Large Concrete Paving Projects (by Dr. Charlie Greer). An afternoon session included: Durability of Concrete Pavement Materials (by Dr. Peter Taylor); Precast Concrete Pavements (by Dr. Mark Snyder); Concrete Overlays (by Dr. Julie Vandenbossche); and Recent Innovations for CRCP (by Dr. Jeff Roesler).
