Florida Airports Council Workshop

Last week, ACPA Chief Engineer, Gary Mitchell, P.E., presented the “Case for Concrete Overlays for General Aviation Airports” at the Florida Airports Council 2023 Education & Training Summit in Melbourne, Florida. Mitchell’s presentation provided the case for concrete overlays as an approach for rehabilitation of general aviation airport runways, taxiways, and aprons that will provide sustainable and resilient pavements. The discussion included topics on the different types of concrete overlays, learning how to evaluate pavement deterioration curves to determine the best timing for a concrete overlay, and understanding what benefits can be achieved with a concrete overlay, such as reduced maintenance, increased capacity and improved resilience to extreme heat events, flooding, and rising water tables. The proper approach using FAA guidance for Life Cycle Cost Analysis was also discussed. The workshop was attended by airport managers, maintenance supervisors, and consulting engineers from across the state responsible for pavement maintenance and pavement rehabilitation design.
